Emotional Flash Points

The pause is most valuable in emotionally charged situations:

  • Anger — a three-second pause before responding to an insult prevents escalation that cannot be undone
  • Criticism — pausing before responding defensively lets you hear feedback that might be valuable
  • Urgency — when someone pressures you for an immediate answer, the pause reveals whether the urgency is real or manufactured
  • Temptation — before an impulsive purchase, click, or commitment, three seconds creates space for your rational mind to weigh in.
