LESSON 4 · Stay Sharp Under Pressure

Training the Pause

The three-second pause is a trainable skill, not a personality trait. Build it with a few specific habits.

Sentence pause: before answering any question, take one visible breath. This buys a second or two every time and makes a short pause feel normal.

Email gap: when a message triggers a reaction, close the tab. Draft your reply in a separate document and return only after an hour, turning a three-second pause into a far longer one.

Name it: silently label what you feel — "that is anger." Putting a word to the emotion engages the prefrontal cortex and loosens its grip.
