Using Deduction Effectively

Apply deductive reasoning with these principles:

  • Check your premises — the conclusion is only as good as its starting points. False premises guarantee nothing
  • Verify the logical form — make sure the argument follows a valid structure, not just intuitive plausibility
  • Watch for hidden premises — many arguments rely on unstated assumptions. Making them explicit is the fastest way to find flaws
  • Combine with other reasoning — deduction proves things within a framework but cannot discover new premises. Use induction for that.
