In practice, eliminative reasoning works by establishing what cannot be the case rather than what must be. You may not be able to name the right answer directly, but you can systematically remove the wrong ones.

Doctors use elimination constantly. They run tests not to confirm a diagnosis but to rule out possibilities — starting with the most dangerous conditions and working down. Each negative result narrows the field until one explanation remains standing.

The same approach works in personal decisions. When choosing between five career paths, start by eliminating any that fail a non-negotiable criterion — location, minimum salary, ethical alignment.
