Emotional awareness strengthens with practice, not talent. Start with three daily check-ins: pause and ask "What am I actually feeling right now?" Do not accept "fine" as an answer.
A feelings wheel maps dozens of specific emotions organized by category — it gives your brain precise vocabulary when vague words like "stressed" are all you can summon. Track body sensations first, then work backward to the emotion they signal.
Research shows that simply labeling an emotion accurately reduces its intensity. Neuroscientists call this "affect labeling," and brain scans confirm it dampens activity in the amygdala. The skill is free, portable, and compounds over time.
