LESSON 5 · Tame the Anxiety Monster
What Mindfulness Actually Is
At its core, mindfulness is noticing without narrating.
Think of thoughts as leaves floating down a stream. The untrained mind jumps onto every leaf and rides it downstream. The mindful mind simply watches the leaves drift past.
This is not about suppressing thoughts. It is about changing your relationship to them. Thoughts arise — that is what brains do. You just do not have to follow every one.
Most distress comes not from what is happening right now, but from thoughts about the past or future. Mindfulness anchors you in the present, where there is usually far less to worry about.
