LESSON 6 · Tame the Anxiety Monster
Types of Professional Help
The mental health field can be confusing. Here is a practical guide.
Psychologist (PhD or PsyD): Provides assessment and talk therapy using approaches such as CBT, DBT, or EMDR. In most places psychologists do not prescribe medication, though rules vary by jurisdiction.
Psychiatrist (MD): A medical doctor who can prescribe medication, though many focus mainly on medication management.
Licensed therapist (LCSW, LPC, LMFT): Provides talk therapy. Often more accessible and affordable. Best for general support, relationship counseling, and life transitions.
A combination approach — therapy plus medication when needed — is often especially useful for moderate to severe conditions.
