LESSON 2 · The Confidence Project

The Three Components

Kristin Neff's model identifies three core components of self-compassion.

Self-kindness over self-judgment. When you fail, you respond with warmth rather than harsh criticism.

Common humanity over isolation. When you struggle, your brain tells you that you are uniquely broken. Self-compassion reminds you that difficulty is universal.

Mindfulness over getting swept away. You notice difficult feelings without being consumed by them: "I am experiencing sadness" rather than "I am a sad person."

All three work together. Kindness without mindfulness becomes self-indulgence. Mindfulness without common humanity feels isolating. The combination creates emotional resilience.
