The Evidence
The research on self-compassion is extensive, and it answers the common objections.
"It makes you lazy." False. Self-compassionate people set equally high standards but are more motivated to try again after failure, because they are not paralyzed by shame.
"It is selfish." False. They show more empathy toward others. When you are not depleted by self-attack, you have more emotional resources to give.
"It is just self-esteem." Not quite. Self-esteem depends on performance — when you fail, it collapses.
"It ignores accountability." False. Self-compassionate people take more responsibility, because they can face failure without the shame that makes denial feel necessary.
