LESSON 2 · Why You Are the Way You Are

Anxious Attachment

About 20% of adults have an anxious attachment style. They crave closeness and stay on alert for any sign a partner might pull away. A late reply, a distracted look, or a cancelled plan can trigger intense abandonment anxiety.

This style develops when caregivers are inconsistently responsive — sometimes available, sometimes not. The child learns, "I cannot predict when my needs will be met, so I must stay watchful."

As adults, anxiously attached people often need frequent reassurance, read ambiguity as rejection, and feel responsible for their partner's moods. The cruel irony is that this behavior often pushes partners away — creating the rejection they feared.
