LESSON 3 · Why You Are the Way You Are

Common Pitfalls

Several mistakes undermine the approach:

  • Assuming your partner's language matches yours. You give gifts because gifts make you feel loved, then can't understand why your quality-time partner seems ungrateful. It's like speaking fluent Italian to someone who only understands Japanese.
  • Performing instead of connecting. Saying "I love you" while checking your phone delivers words without presence.
  • Using it as a weapon. "I gave you quality time, now you owe me." The moment it turns transactional, the meaning evaporates.
  • Ignoring changes. A new parent may shift from quality time to acts of service, because practical help is what they need now.
