LESSON 1 · Burnout: Recognize, Recover, Prevent
The Difference Matters
Everyone gets tired. A tough week or a bad night of sleep wears you down, but tiredness is a normal response to exertion and it clears up with rest. Burnout is different. Rest does not fix it. A vacation does not cure it.
The World Health Organization recognizes burnout as an occupational phenomenon with three dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced effectiveness. All three must be present. Being wiped out after one big sprint does not qualify.
Telling the two apart matters because they need completely different responses. Resting through burnout is like putting a bandage on a broken bone — it eases the symptom while the real problem keeps going.
