LESSON 3 · Burnout: Recognize, Recover, Prevent

When Leaving Is the Answer

Sometimes the environment cannot be fixed. Workload will not change. Management will not improve. Culture is fundamentally toxic. Leaving is not giving up — it is self-preservation.

Signs leaving may be necessary:

  • You raised concerns and were dismissed or penalized
  • Culture rewards overwork and punishes boundaries
  • Your values and the organization's are incompatible
  • Multiple people in the same role have burned out — systemic problem
  • Staying is causing measurable harm

The fear of leaving is usually worse than the reality. People who leave toxic environments report relief within weeks.
