LESSON 3 · What Actually Drives You
Working with Dopamine
The goal is not to maximize dopamine - it is to optimize it.
Use anticipation strategically. Planning something you look forward to generates dopamine through the whole anticipation period.
Vary your rewards. Variable rewards produce stronger responses than predictable ones. Change routes, try new recipes, shift your workspace.
Delay gratification carefully. Waiting for larger future rewards can help, but the old claim that it is one of the strongest predictors of success is too simple; context matters.
Celebrate progress. Break large goals into smaller checkpoints and acknowledge each - steady dopamine from real accomplishment.
Your dopamine system is adaptable. Give it challenges and recovery - it serves you well.
