LESSON 2 · Escape Toxic Patterns

How Codependency Works

The codependent dynamic needs two roles: the caretaker and the taker. The caretaker provides endless support and emotional labor. The taker receives it and, knowingly or not, takes advantage of the imbalance.

The caretaker does not set boundaries because boundaries feel like abandonment. Saying no feels like the relationship will end — and with it, their purpose.

The taker does not change because there is no reason to: why fix your own problems when someone else does it for free?

The cruel irony: the caretaker thinks they help, but they enable. By absorbing the consequences of bad behavior, they remove the reason to change. Helping becomes hurting.
