The Spiral Staircase
A better metaphor for healing than a straight line is a spiral staircase. You keep coming back to the same themes — abandonment, anger, trust, self-worth — but each time you are at a slightly higher elevation.
The first time you confront your trust issues, you barely recognize them. The next time, you see the pattern but cannot yet change it. Later, you catch it as it happens.
This is why therapy can feel repetitive. "Are we really talking about my mother again?" Yes — because her imprints show up in your relationships, friendships, and self-talk.
Progress often looks small at first: the same trigger that once floored you now produces only a less intense reaction.
