LESSON 1 · Emotional Intelligence for Couples
The Emotional Vocabulary Gap
Most people run on a small emotional vocabulary: "angry," "sad," and "fine." But beneath those broad labels sit dozens of more precise emotions that change how a conversation goes.
The gap between "I feel disappointed" and "I feel angry" matters. Disappointment invites empathy; anger triggers defense. Naming whether you feel dismissed, overlooked, unappreciated, or abandoned gives your partner something specific to respond to.
To build the skill, keep an emotion journal for one week. Three times a day, pause and name exactly what you feel.
