LESSON 2 · Emotional Intelligence for Couples

The Anxious-Avoidant Dance

A classic toxic pairing: one partner chases, the other retreats. The chaser's pursuit confirms the avoider's need for space. The avoider's withdrawal confirms the chaser's fear of abandonment.

Breaking the dance requires both partners to do the opposite of their instinct. The anxious partner practices self-soothing instead of reaching out. The avoidant partner practices staying present instead of retreating. It feels wrong at first — that's how you know it's working.
