LESSON 1 · Boundaries That Protect Love

Boundaries in Practice

Setting a boundary is simple in theory but scary in practice. The key: a boundary is about your behavior, not controlling someone else. You can't make someone stop yelling, but you can leave the room when they do.

Effective boundaries follow a clear shape: "When [behavior happens], I will [action]." No threats, no jabs at their character — just cause and effect based on what you control.

Start with low-stakes boundaries. Tell a friend you need to leave by a certain time, or say no to an invitation without elaborate excuses. Each small one builds the confidence for the bigger ones ahead.
