Gottman calls little moves for attention 'bids' — a glance, a comment, a hand on the shoulder. In his research, couples who stayed happily together responded to these bids about 86% of the time, while those who later split responded only about a third of the time. Noticing and answering the small ones is what keeps a couple close.
