LESSON 1 · The New Rules of Commitment
No One-Size Model
The traditional relationship model — meet, date, marry, have children — worked for some but was never the only option. Today, adults are designing relationships that fit their actual lives: long-distance partnerships, child-free marriages, living-apart-together arrangements, and more.
Choosing consciously is what matters. The problem is when people follow a model by default rather than by choice. Default choices produce default satisfaction — mediocre rather than fulfilling. The couples who report the highest satisfaction are not following any particular model. They are the ones who deliberately chose the structure that honors both partners' core needs.
