LESSON 2 · The New Rules of Commitment

How to Have It

Timing matters. Too early feels pushy. Too late feels overdue. A good window is once you have been seeing each other consistently for 4-8 weeks and want clarity:

  • Choose a calm, private moment — not during a date high or after a fight
  • Be direct but not demanding — "I've been enjoying this and I'd like to know where you see it going"
  • State your own position first — vulnerability invites reciprocity
  • Listen without reacting — their answer may not match yours, and that is useful information

A softer opening can help: "I really like where this is going. Can we talk about what we both want from this?"
