LESSON 2 · Break the Yelling Cycle

When You Need The Pause

If the switches are not landing, step away. This is not avoidance — it is strategic regulation. Say: "I need a minute to calm down so I can be the parent you deserve."

Your child learns two things: feelings are manageable, and taking space is a healthy move. You are modeling the exact skill you want them to build. Keep it short — about a minute or two — so they never feel abandoned. While you are away:

  • Run a few long exhales
  • Remember your real goal: connection, not compliance
  • Lower the bar for the next ten minutes

Come back with a calmer voice. The crisis that felt urgent rarely still is.
