LESSON 1 · Tantrum Survival Guide

What This Means for You

Understanding your child's brain changes how you respond to their behavior:

  • Lower your expectations for emotional control in children under 7 — their prefrontal cortex is barely online
  • Stop asking "why did you do that?" mid-tantrum — they genuinely do not know
  • Connect before you correct — calm the downstairs brain first, then teach the lesson
  • Reframe tantrums as building opportunities — every co-regulation episode strengthens their neural wiring
  • Respect temperament — a reactive child is not a broken child; they need more support, not more discipline

Your child is not giving you a hard time. They are having a hard time.
