LESSON 1 · Tantrum Survival Guide

Co-Regulation in Action

Your nervous system is your child's external regulator. When you stay calm during their storm, your calm body signals safety to their brain. This is called co-regulation, and it is biology, not theory. How to co-regulate:

  • Slow your breathing visibly — let them hear your long exhales
  • Lower your body — kneel or sit to be at their level
  • Speak slowly with pauses between phrases
  • Keep your facial expression soft, even if you feel tense

This is exhausting, because it asks you to regulate yourself first. On days when you are depleted, co-regulation is harder. That is normal and does not mean you are failing.
