LESSON 2 · Tantrum Survival Guide

The Three-Step Protocol

Same moves work in stores, restaurants, and airports.

  • Step 1: Narrate calmly. Drop to eye level: "I can see you're really upset. We'll figure this out together." This tells your child — and anyone watching — that an adult is steering.
  • Step 2: Create space. Move to a quieter spot if you can: an empty aisle, a bench, the sidewalk outside. Fewer sights and sounds let the meltdown burn out faster.
  • Step 3: Ride it out or exit. If your child settles in a couple of minutes, stay. If not, leave without apology: "We're taking a break in the car."
