LESSON 3 · Tantrum Survival Guide

The Recovery Window

The first few minutes after a tantrum are the most important teaching moment of the whole episode. Your child's nervous system has just come back online — they are open, vulnerable, and primed to learn.

Do not waste this window on lectures. Use it for connection:

  • Offer physical comfort if they want it
  • Narrate what happened: "You were really upset about leaving the park"
  • Name the feeling: "That was frustration — a big wave of it"
  • Normalize it: "Everyone has moments like that"

This is when emotional learning actually happens. With your calm guidance, they learn that feelings pass, that you still love them, and that they survived.
