Disconnection, Not Defiance

When your child ignores your request for the fifth time, your first thought is usually "they're doing this on purpose." But most non-compliance is not defiance. It is disconnection. Children who feel connected to their parent naturally want to cooperate.

Think of connection as a bank account. Every positive interaction — a laugh, a cuddle, focused attention — is a deposit. Every correction or demand is a withdrawal. When the account is full, your child follows willingly. Check your balance before blaming the child.
