LESSON 3 · End the Power Struggle

Phrases That Flip the Script

Replace common commands with cooperation invitations:

  • Instead of "Clean your room" try "What's the first thing we should pick up?"
  • Instead of "Stop yelling" try "Can you use your indoor voice? I want to hear you"
  • Instead of "Eat your vegetables" try "Do you want carrots or peas tonight?"
  • Instead of "Get dressed" try "Shirt first or pants first?"
  • Instead of "Stop hitting" try "Hands are for helping. Show me gentle"

The pattern is the same every time: acknowledge the child's autonomy while directing the outcome. You are not giving up your authority.
