LESSON 3 · End the Power Struggle

The Yes Sandwich

When you need to say no, wrap it in yeses. This is not manipulation — it is acknowledging your child's wants while holding your boundary. "You want ice cream. I love ice cream too. We're having fruit now, and ice cream can happen after dinner." The child heard their desire validated and got a timeline. They did not hear a flat "no."

More examples:

  • "You want to keep playing. This game is fun. We'll play again tomorrow — right now it's bath time"
  • "You want the red cup. Your brother has it now. You can have it when he's done, or take the blue one"

It works because children push back against rejection but go along with redirection.
