LESSON 4 · End the Power Struggle

Building Morning Evening Anchors

The two most important routines are morning and evening. Build them with these principles:

  • Keep the sequence the same every day, so it becomes automatic
  • Use 4-6 steps — more than that overwhelms young children
  • Make it visual: a picture chart for pre-readers, a checklist for older kids
  • Include one choice, like "cereal or toast?", to give agency within structure
  • Build in buffer time, because rushing destroys the calm a routine creates

Example morning routine: wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth, pack bag, shoes on. That is six steps.
