Anatomy of Great Routines

Effective routines share these features:

  • Same sequence every time — the order creates automaticity
  • Visual cue — a chart or picture list they can check themselves
  • Built-in choice — one decision point so they feel ownership
  • Natural reward at the end — breakfast after dressing, a story after brushing teeth
  • Time buffer — 10 extra minutes prevents the rushing that destroys calm

The most common mistake is making routines too ambitious. Start with the smallest number of steps that gets the job done. You can always add more later.
