LESSON 2 · Discipline Without Drama

The Low-and-Slow Technique

When you need to set a limit, do the opposite of what your body wants:

  • Lower your voice instead of raising it — drop to a near-whisper if needed
  • Slow your speech — urgency in your voice creates panic in theirs
  • Shorten your sentences — "Hands down. Now" carries more weight than a long explanation
  • Make eye contact — look at them from their level
  • Move closer — distance makes you louder, proximity makes you clearer

Calmness signals competence. Think of how a surgeon speaks in the operating room. Quiet authority tells the child the situation is under control.
