The Two-Part Limit Formula

Every effective limit has two parts: the boundary + the empathy.

"I won't let you hit. I can see you're frustrated." The boundary comes first, clear and non-negotiable. The empathy comes second, validating the emotion behind the behavior. Never reverse the order — empathy first sounds like you are about to cave.

If the child pushes back, repeat without escalating. Same words, same tone, same calm. "I won't let you hit." The power is in the repetition, not the volume.
