LESSON 3 · Raise Resilient Kids
Confidence Through Competence
Real confidence comes from doing real things. Not from praise, not from trophies, not from being told you are special. It comes from the lived experience of attempting something difficult and discovering you can handle it. This is why over-praising and over-protecting both backfire.
A child who earns their confidence through genuine accomplishment carries it into adulthood. A child whose confidence was built on empty praise discovers it crumbles the moment real challenge arrives. The difference is not talent. It is whether the child was allowed to struggle, fail, and recover — the only path to durable self-belief.
