Birth order is not destiny. It can create different family niches, but large studies find little consistent effect on broad personality traits. The useful point is simpler: each child looks for a distinct role in the family system.

The key insight: each child occupies a unique family role and compares themselves to siblings constantly. If one child is "the smart one," another may unconsciously avoid academics to differentiate.
