LESSON 4 · Parenting Your Teenager

Hand It Off in Stages

Most skills are not taught in one talk — they are released in steps. Take any task they will own as an adult and walk it down the ladder:

  1. Do it with them while they watch and ask questions
  2. Do it beside them as they take the lead
  3. Let them do it solo while you stay reachable
  4. Step out and let the results, good or bad, be theirs

The tempting move is rescuing them at step three. Resist it. A small failure now, with you nearby, is far cheaper than the first one at 18 with no one to call.
