Expectations That Match

Most parenting frustration comes from expectations running ahead of development. Asking a four-year-old to sit quietly through a long restaurant meal ignores that their impulse control is simply not built yet.

Matching expectations to development does not mean accepting every behavior. It means choosing responses that fit what the brain can do right now. A child who falls apart at bedtime is not defying you; they are tired and out of fuel.
