LESSON 4 · Growing Emotional Intelligence

The Big Picture

A quick recap of how empathy actually grows:

  • It is learned, not automatic. Kids start with some raw capacity to feel with others; your teaching turns it into a real skill.
  • Both kinds matter. Reading people and feeling for them have to work together.
  • Ask, don't lecture. A simple "How do you think they felt?" trains the habit.
  • Let them watch you. Say your own caring thoughts out loud.
  • Empathy for hard people is a strength. It tells you what is really going on.
