LESSON 2 · Lose Weight Without Dieting

The Regain Problem

Long-term regain is common after weight-loss diets. Estimates vary by study and by program, but many people regain some or all of the weight within 2-5 years, and some end up heavier than they started. This is not because dieters lack willpower.

When you slash calories, your body mounts a defense. Hunger hormones spike, metabolic rate drops, and your brain fixates on food. Biggest Loser contestants still had suppressed metabolisms six years after the show — burning 500 fewer calories than expected.
