LESSON 3 · Sleep Like Your Life Depends On It
When Nothing Works
If you've tried the techniques and still lie awake past 30 minutes most nights, the culprit is usually that learned bed-equals-awake link from the start of this course. You can't relax your way out of a habit, so you have to overwrite it.
The fix feels wrong but works: leave the bed. Go to another room, keep the lights low, and do something genuinely dull — fold laundry, read a boring page. Return only when your eyes are heavy. Do this consistently and your brain relearns that bed means sleep.
When sleepless nights stretch past three months, the strongest evidence-based fix is CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia). It is often recommended before long-term sleeping pills because it treats the habits and thoughts that keep insomnia going, without medication side effects.
