LESSON 5 · Sleep Like Your Life Depends On It

Why We Dream

Dreams burst into life mainly during REM sleep, when your brain fires almost as hard as it does when you are awake. Yet your body lies still.

The leading explanation is that dreams are emotional processing. As you dream, your brain replays the day's events but turns down their emotional volume, keeping the memory while softening the sting. That is why a worry that feels crushing at midnight often looks like a simple to-do item by morning.
