LESSON 1 · Your Gut: The Hidden Brain

What Your Gut Bacteria Do

The microbiome is not just along for the ride. It performs critical functions:

  • Digestion - bacteria break down fibers and complex carbs that human enzymes cannot touch
  • Vitamin production - gut bacteria help produce vitamin K, folate, and other nutrients
  • Immune training - much of your immune system is shaped by microbial interactions in the gut
  • Neurochemical regulation - gut-lining cells make most of the body's serotonin, and microbes help regulate that production.
