Here is the surprising part: you can nudge the vagus nerve on purpose, like a lever you can reach.
Slow breathing is the simplest handle. Make your exhale longer than your inhale and you flip the body toward its rest-and-digest setting, easing both stress and a churning stomach.
There is a stranger trick, too. Splash cold water on your face and you set off the diving reflex, an automatic vagal response that slows your heart within moments. Both are tiny, deliberate tugs on the same line your gut uses all day long.
