Mistakes to Avoid

Good layering falls apart fast if you trip on these:

  • Too much bulk: each layer should sit slightly looser than the one beneath, not balloon two sizes up
  • Same texture twice: pair smooth with rough, knit with woven, so the layers do not blur together
  • Bad proportions: if the outer piece runs long, keep the base cropped or tucked
  • Every layer hidden: show at least one edge of each piece, or the depth vanishes
  • One flat color: tonal works, but shift the shade so each layer still reads as its own
