Texture Is the Secret

The line between layering that looks planned and layering that looks accidental is texture. Put a smooth silk camisole under a chunky knit cardigan. Drop a structured cotton blazer over a soft jersey tee.

Match the textures instead, and the layers melt into one shapeless block. The depth you worked for disappears. Think of a band: the same instrument played three times is just louder, but a drum, a bass, and a guitar make something fuller. Contrast is what makes layers read as layers.
