LESSON 3 · The 15-Piece Wardrobe

Pattern Mixing Within Capsules

Most capsule advice says stick to solids, but strategic pattern mixing adds visual richness without more pieces. The rule is simple: vary the scale. Pair a large pattern with a small one, like a wide-striped shirt with a fine-checked blazer, so the patterns do not compete.

Keep patterns within your capsule color family so they coordinate on their own, and cap yourself at one or two patterned pieces in your fifteen. That ceiling is exactly why mixing them works: with only two in play, they read as one deliberate look rather than a clash. More than that creates coordination headaches that defeat the purpose of simplified dressing.
