From the Spanish word for 'Chinese'
The fabric was a sturdy cotton twill sourced through China, so soldiers stationed abroad started calling the pants chinos. Today the name has nothing to do with the country and everything to do with the look: clean, tailored cotton trousers that sit right between jeans and dress slacks.
