LESSON 2 · Stop the Bite
Why Hands Are Targets
Hands are the most common bite target because they are the body part that interacts most with the dog. Hands deliver food, offer petting, reach for collars, clip nails, and pull things from mouths. A dog with bad hand experiences — grabbing, hitting, or forced restraint — may bite hands defensively.
Other dogs bite hands during play because they were allowed to mouth as puppies and were never redirected. A puppy nibbling fingers is cute; an adult dog chomping hands is dangerous. Bite inhibition is easiest to teach before adult teeth and adult jaw strength arrive, usually around four to six months, but older dogs can still improve with careful management, trades, and professional help if biting is serious.
