Don't punish your dog over an accident you find later. If you didn't catch them in the act, they can't tie your anger to something they did minutes or hours ago — the link simply isn't there in their head.

So when you find an accident, clean it calmly and ask what slipped. Was your dog loose and unwatched too long? Did you miss the sniff-and-circle warning? Was the last spot never fully treated, pulling them back to it?
